The light of science has yet to banish the darkness of the supernatural from the Victorian world. Yet lurking beyond what is a mere shadow of horror is a far more darker and malevolent reality - a world where sanity can be shredded in an instant by the startling revelations that mankind is ultimately an insignificant speck of dust in an uncaring universe inhabited by immense and hostile beings from beyond space and time.
Inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft, Leagues of Cthulhu explores the mind-rending terror of the Cthulhu Mythos.
This book is set a generation earlier than Lovecraft's works, which were primarily based in the 1920s and 1930s. Lovecraft's canon has yet to become reality for the fictional world of Leagues of Adventure, meaning it is your adventurers who have the dubious honor of being the first to explore risen R'lyeh, scale the Mountains of Madness, or locate the lost city of Sarnath.
Is this a standalone RPG?
No.
This book is an expansion designed for use with Leagues of Adventure, a roleplaying game of Victorian exploration, derring-do, and steampunk weird science. The contents will be compatible with other Ubiquity-powered games, though. However, if you want all the rich background information on the Victorian world into which Leagues of Cthulhu snugly fits, you'll need Leagues of Adventure.
Regardless of your Ubiquity setting of choice, possession of the Leagues of Gothic Horror core book is essential as we are not repeating the rules for using occult tomes or magic, nor the new horror-related Leagues, Talents, Flaws, and weird science devices, introduced in that volume.
What's the difference between this and Chaosium's Cthulhu by Gaslight?
While the two games are set in the same era, Gaslight, while a great book, focuses solely on Victorian Britain. Leagues of Adventure already covers the Victorian world, allowing us to focus the contents of this book purely on the Cthulhu Mythos of the late Victorian era.
Unlike our previous Leagues of Adventure books, Leagues of Cthulhu will be printed in our new format of choice - 6.69" x 9.61" (170 mm x 244 mm). The book is 96 pages, with black and white interior pages and a full color hardcover.
Within the book you will find:
An overview of the Cthulhu Mythos as written by H. P. Lovecraft.
A new skill for those brave enough to delve into the forbidden lore of the Cthulhu Mythos.
New weird science devices and a new League of Adventure suitable for those who have peered beyond the illusion of reality.
Sample characters (with art) and eight sample henchmen.
Mythos magic and sanity-shattering tomes.
A tour of dozens of Mythos locations around the globe.
Alien gods, terrifying monsters, and dastardly cults guaranteed to test even the strongest mind.
Advice on handling the Mythos, along with extra adventure seeds.
